Learning in groups (how to be in a group)

New to Leeds Recovery College, or group learning? This gentle introductory session is a great way to find your feet and get a feel for how our courses work.

Description

New to the Recovery College or feeling unsure?

This supportive and practical workshop is a great first step. It’s designed to help you feel more confident, informed, and ready to take part in our courses, especially if you're unfamiliar with group learning or you're feeling a little anxious about what to expect.

In this session, we’ll explore what makes Recovery College different from peer support and therapy, how group learning works, and what a supportive group environment can look like.

You’ll get a chance to meet others, get to know some of our standard activities, and reflect on how you’d like to participate. We’ll also cover the role of facilitators, how we work together using a group agreement, and how to look after yourself in a group setting.

This workshop includes light, optional activities such as speaking in rounds and practising active listening skills, common features of our courses.

We strongly encourage all new students to attend before joining other courses. It’s a gentle, informative way to get to know how our courses work.

 In the workshop we will:

  • Explore how group learning works and what to expect

  • Explain the role of facilitators and how they support the group experience

  • Try out some common activities used in sessions, including; discussion rounds, active listening skills, and group agreements

  • Aim to leave you feeling more comfortable, confident and prepared to take part in future courses
