Sexual orientation and health: Awareness session

Raising awareness of sexual orientation and its impact on mental health, focusing on appropriate terminology, visibility, and support strategies.

Description

Mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety and self-harming behaviours, can affect anyone, but they are particularly prevalent among people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. This increase prevalence may be linked to experience of discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, bullying, social isolation or rejection based on their sexual orientation.

Other things like age and factors such as the community in which you live, and your background can add additional pressures.

In this interactive session, we will focus on raising awareness of sexual orientation, which is different from gender identity. Sexual orientation refers to how individuals express their sexuality in relation to others.

In this interactive workshop, we will:

  • Discuss commonly used and appropriate terminology used to describe different sexual orientations.

  • Consider the visibility of different kinds of identities.

  • Debunk common myths and misconceptions around different sexual orientations.

  • Explore ways to support and improve health and social inequalities.
